Ride a Zappy

The Zappy electric scooter is fun, easy to ride, and in some cases a practical transportation alternative.

A Zappy is a scooter -- 2 wheels, a platform, and a steering handle -- like the kid's toy some of us used to have (and which is making an interesting comeback as well.). The difference is that a 12-volt battery powers a small electric motor, so you can just stand and ride. The motor will take you about 10mph on level ground, with a range of 5 to 10 miles (usually more like 5). Pneumatic tires make the ride smooth, and the brake is powerful enough to lock the rear wheel in a panic stop.


The Zappy is easy to operate. Children hop on, and in a few seconds are zipping around (and won't give it back until the battery is dead). Adults have a tendency to admire the scooter but decline to ride, citing the likelihood of breaking their necks. This is a largely unfounded fear; everyone who has tried my Zappy has emerged unscathed. I offer the example of these distinguished southern gentlemen.
